Established in 1797 as the first settlement of Franklin County, the neighborhood is currently undergoing a vibrant transformation, with artists and new residents revitalizing long-forgotten factories and spaces. The hotel’s name, brand identity, and interior concept were designed to anchor this burgeoning district by authentically reflecting its creative, industrial, and small-town spirit. Inspiration was drawn from Benjamin Franklin’s 1727 “Junto Club,” a group of diverse individuals who gathered for mutual improvement and inquiry. Mirroring this spirit, The Junto emphasizes public gathering spaces—including a lobby library, a café, and a rooftop bar—where locals and visitors can exchange ideas and inspire one another. Throughout the hotel, the branding pays tribute to the area’s industrial heritage with a bold, minimal aesthetic. The strong wordmark and dynamic typography capture the unconventional, visionary spirit that defines the unique character of Franklinton today. for dining, retail, and creative expression. Developed in collaboration with The Lo &amp; Behold Group, the branding serves as a dynamic “container” for the diverse businesses on-site. The identity was designed to be bold enough to engage visitors while remaining flexible enough to retreat and let the individual tenant brands shine. The name “New Bahru” playfully blends English and Malay, reflecting Singapore’s multicultural vibrancy and the code-switching fluency of its people. To capture this hybrid spirit, the visual identity pairs a utilitarian typeface with a custom hand-drawn font. The primary marks draw direct inspiration from the site’s architecture, referencing the building's footprint and the distinctive arc shapes of the original school hall. Functional yet charming, the branding system extends into a detailed signage and wayfinding program developed alongside local architects and landscape designers. By using the “N” from the primary mark as a foundational structure for signage, the design creates a physical link between the identity and the building’s form. The result is a colorful, ever-evolving destination that invites those with a curious mind to explore a unique blend of experiences and cultures. The bar’s name is a nod to Ben Franklin’s The Drinker’s Dictionary, where it appears as one of 228 terms for drunkenness—a fitting allusion to the original Junto Club’s culture of spirited gatherings. Echoing their convivial nature, the bar’s design sparks curiosity, camaraderie, and lively discourse among its guests. Brass Eye’s brand uses intentional imperfections—an off-kilter wordmark, playful “drunken” language, and subtly skewed typography—to cultivate a humorous and relaxed atmosphere. Financial District that transitions from a lunch spot by day to an aperitivo and cicchetti bar by night. “Sprezzatura” is an Italian word that first appears in Baldassare Castiglione’s 1528&nbsp;The Book of the Courtier, where it is defined by the author as “a certain nonchalance, so as to conceal all art and make whatever one does or says appear to be without effort and almost without any thought about it.” It’s one of those untranslatable words that is uniquely Italian. Basically, sprezzatura simply means doing something extremely well without showing that it took any effort. The visual identity serves as an ode to mid-century Italian signage, combining a bold geometric wordmark with a charming hand-drawn winged lion muse. This "leone alato," inspired by the icons of Piazza San Marco, is depicted holding a glass of wine to add a playful human touch. Graphic patterns inspired by the Sun Cross and columns of the Doge’s Palace further immerse guests in the floating city. The brand’s personality is rounded out by an eclectic mix of trattoria-inspired typography and quirky Italian idioms that add a layer of unpretentious humor. We set out to imbue the brand with a rich visual language that was diverse and flexible yet coherent, and one where there was always evidence of humanity and warmth present. We established a look and feel around the idea of “rebel optimism” and Chobani’s core belief of “good food for all.” I was involved in all aspects of the project from the beginning including visual research and mood boarding to the design of the comprehensive 137-page brand toolkit deliverable. For each of the client meetings, we created a workshop-like feel to the spaces by covering the walls and tables with mood board images and photography as well as our design explorations in their various phases. The brand identity was designed to harmonize with a complex layout featuring a grand dining room, central bar, and mercato, all while respecting the architectural heritage of three restored townhomes. The name “Sorelle” (Italian for “sisters”) was inspired by the building’s history as a school operated by two sisters over a century ago, as well as a personal nod to the client’s two daughters. This narrative is woven into the visual identity through a loose, gestural secondary mark that depicts the sisters, adding a welcoming and human touch to the brand. The design reflects an effortless and elegant aesthetic, featuring a primary mark inspired by handmade Italian menu boards and subtle geometric graphics that echo the building's historical details. Every element was crafted to transition seamlessly from the casual atmosphere of the mercato to the refined upstairs dining room, resulting in an warm brand that complements the captivating space. We were tasked with finding a way to express the idea of “creative addiction” and my artwork was chosen for the cover. For the final execution, I distilled my idea down to the simplest of forms that would be able to express all of the poking, digging, scratching, pulling, sniffing, looking, tasting, and discovering that happens during the creative process—a&nbsp;tactile energy that I also captured in an animation for BRAIN’s social channels. We wanted to embrace the happy, joyful mood that’s a natural part of the season while also encouraging collecting and interaction with the stickers. I chose to tap into the excitement of the springtime activity of kids collecting bugs. I proposed an accompanying pocket guide that features all of the spring landscapes of the bugs in more detail.
